Melakiah Herring

The following is from a microfilm copy of a Fort Smith, AR newspaper dated August 14, 1885.  Scullyville, Choctaw Nation is 4 miles NE of the present Spiro, OK.

Melakiah Herrin (or Herron or Heron) was the father of Minnie Delcina McCullar who was the mother of Beulah Partain (the wife of Charlie Partain.)  Minnie was an only child and her mother also died while she was very young, leaving her an orphan.  She was raised by an aunt named Switzer.

SCULLYVILLE, C.N., August 11, 1885 - Last evening about 5 o'clock Melakiah Herrin, a white man, living on Jesse Hardaways farm on Poteau River, started from his home to visit a sick neighbor about a half-mile away, and when in about 100 yards of the house of his sick friend, some unseen party fired on him from the brush with a shot gun, three large buck-shot taking effect in the back and thigh.  He suffered extremely for five or six hours, when death relieved him.  No clue to the murderer has been discovered as yet.
